Trade Deadline Target: Steve Ott
The rumour mill is now churning out Steve Ott's name. I don't know why the Stars would part with him; I don't know what they would want for him. Either way Ott would be a great addition for the Oilers, a player whose style is badly required here. The Oilers need to be harder to play against and Ott would make the Oilers hard to play against.
I was surprised to see that Ott plays the high number of minutes that he does. In the last 3 seasons, including this one to date, Ott plays an average of 14:36 this season (4th F on the Stars), 12:50 last season (7th F on the Stars), and 13:06 three seasons ago (6th F on the Stars) ES ice time. He would need to play 4th line duty in Edmonton behind RNH, Horcoff, and potentially Gagner.
Ott adds to the Oilers versatility. He routinely plays on the PP and PK in Dallas. This season 1:41 PK/2:15 PP, last season 2:02 PK/2:15 PP, and three seasons ago 1:21 PK/1:59 PP.
I did say center in the above comments. This season Ott has take 720 face-offs for 56.9%, which is second in draws taken in Dallas. Last season he took 1138 face-offs for 56.6%, second in face-offs taken in Dallas. Three seasons ago he took 352 face-offs for 56.8%, 5th in face-offs taken.
Ott can also add some offensive pop to the line up. This season he has tallied 9 times and added 18 assist in 54 games with 201 hits. Last season in 82 games he scored 12 goals and 20 assists with 252 hits. In 2009/10 in 73 games he scored 22 goals and added 14 assists with 251 hits.
I would add Ott and his gritty agitating style.
Just think of Eager on LW, Ott at C, and Tootoo on RW...
