MacT, say it ain't so?

The return of MacT signals the safety that Kevin Lowe and Steve Tambellini have in their positions. While thankfully Craig MacTavish isn't returning as head coach, his addition to the management causes me some concern for the team’s future.

By all accounts Craig MacTavish is a very smart guy. His education and use of colourful language certainly point to that and I have no reason to think otherwise. My concern is with MacT's opinion weighing in on the talent additions and subtracts to the Oilers.

In reviewing the time MacT was coach in Edmonton he honestly had very little to work with on the talent side of the equation. He also, to his benefit, had veteran players to use. A veteran roster will benefit a coach greatly over an experienced one. Refer to Tom Renney and Brent Sutter in Calgary.

My take on his talent evaluation is his obvious love of players like Todd Marchant, Ethan Moreau, Shawn Horcoff, Fernando Pisani, and Steve Staios and the over use of these kinds of players. The Oilers are short of players who fit the power forward, puck moving defensemen, and physical and responsible defensemen. The preference that MacT has shown in the past doesn't give me confidence he understands that concept.
