The Draft Lottery 2013

Will Lightning strike again?

Steve Tambellini was right when he said he wouldn't be here again... little did he realize.  The Oilers will look at drafting at either #1, #7, or #8.  The odds of the Oilers winning the lottery is 4.7%.  Tune in for the excitement.  Will the Hockey Gods double down on Copper and Blue?

Craig MacTavish tipped his hat at who he thinks should be #1, Seth Jones.  Personally, I am wary of taking defensemen in the top 5.  While he hinted at the possibility of dropping down in the draft, I do not think he does this with Seth Jones.

One direction I think the Oilers need to move in is increasing their Canadian content.  I'm no Don Cherry, but the Oilers need for a more physical and aggressive style of game usually come from WHL and OHLers. Not every OHL or WHL player is Wendel Clark, but how many Europeans fit that style?  I think MacT hinted at that direction and style of player in comments over later round picks.  The Oilers have tended to lean on some NCAA and smaller European and North American players in those rounds, clearly skill is found a lot earlier in the draft.

FFT for the Oilers 1st round pick:

#1 D - Seth Jones.  MacKinnon is the clear #2 in this draft.

#7 C Sean Monahan.  The big 6-3 center can play in both ends.  He seems to be custom made for the Oilers desperate need for size down the middle.

#8 D Darnell Nurse.  The 6-5 194 pound defender referred to as "effortless skater.... heavy shot... big.... mean..."

On the radar 1st round:

C - Curtis Lazar - WHL - Edmonton Oil Kings - Right shot - 6-0 193
LW Kerby Rychel - OHL - Windsor Spitfires - Left shot - 6-1 200
RW Ryan Hartman - OHL - Plymouth Whalers - Right shot - 6-2 203
C Bo Horvath - OHL - London Knights - Left shot - 6-0 200

On the rader 2nd round:

MacTavish admitted a weakness in goal and the stat guru's breakdown of a goalie taken in the 2nd or 5th round as having equal odds of working out.  With that said with the 7th pick in the 2nd round:

G - Eric Comrie - WHL - Tri City Americans - Left - 6-1 167
G - Tristan Jarry - WHL - Edmonton Oil Kings - Left - 6-2 178
(an edge to Jarry on size and organizational knowledge)

Oilers acquired pick from Anaheim 2nd Round:

C\RW - Justin Bailey - OHL - Kitchener Rangers - Right - 6-3 194
C\LW - Ryan Kujawinski - OHL Kingston Frontenacs - Left - 6-1 203
RW - Zach Nastasiuk - OHL Owen Sound - Right - 6-1 191
D - Dillon Heatherington - WHL - Swift Current Broncos - 6-4 196
LW - Stephen Harper - OHL Erie Otters - 6-1 202
C - Greg Chase - WHL - Calgary Hitmen - 6-0 195
C\LW Nick Moutrey - Saginaw Spirit - 6-2 208
(Variance will depend on the Ducks position being determined after the playoffs end)
